Nigerian Smoothie Recipes
Ten drinks you can blend from what's already at your market. Everyone is written for a 350 ml jar, with the loading order that stops the blender from stalling and the honest prep time, including soaking—because tiger nut milk takes overnight and no recipe that pretends otherwise is being straight with you.
How ours are written
- 350 ml, one serving—the jar you own, not a 1.5-litre jug.
- Loading order every time—liquid, soft, frozen, or hard last.
- Real prep time, including soaking and straining.
- Local ingredients, local names. Tiger nut, not "chufa." Zobo, not "hibiscus tea."
- No claims. These are drinks. A smoothie is not a treatment and won't change your body.
The two things that improve every one of them
-
Freeze the fruit
Ice waters a drink down; frozen fruit thickens it. Freeze pawpaw and banana chunks when they're ripe and cheap.
-
Liquid first, hard things last, then pulse three times before running
This is the whole difference between a
smooth drink and a stalled motor.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make tiger nut milk in a blender?
Soak tiger nuts overnight, drain, then blend with fresh water, a few dates, and a little coconut for about 60 seconds. Strain through a muslin cloth or fine sieve. The soak is essential—unsoaked tiger nuts are too hard and will blunt blades.
Can you blend zobo?
Yes, once it's steeped and cooled. Steep the dried hibiscus, cool it, then blend with pineapple and ginger. Never blend it hot—hot liquid in a sealed jar builds pressure and forces the lid off.
What fruits are best for smoothies in Nigeria?
Pawpaw, banana, pineapple, watermelon, soursop, mango, and agbalumo in season. All are cheap when in season and freeze well, which is the trick to making smoothies affordable year-round.
Can I make these without a blender?
Tiger nut milk and zobo can be made by pounding and straining, traditionally. The smoothies need a blender—that's what makes them smoothies.
Do I need to peel pawpaw before blending?
Yes, peel and deseed it. The skin is bitter and the seeds are peppery, and neither breaks down properly in a
blender.
